FIFA To Expand World Cup To 48 Teams

ZURICH, Jan 10 (Reuters) – FIFAs council has unanimously backed strategies by President Gianni Infantino to enlarge the World Cup to 48 teams from 32 beginning in 2026, the international football body said on Tuesday.

The brand new format is going to be composed of 16 groups of three teams, FIFA said in a tweet sent by its own media section, adding more details will follow following a meeting of the 37-member FIFA Council in Zurich on Tuesday.

Infantino, elected to replace the disgraced Sepp Blatter, vowed during his campaign – a guarantee designed specially to attract the majority of FIFAs 211 participant organizations that seldom or never be eligible for World Cups.
